On Monday, a California judge sentenced former UFC fighter Cain Velasquez to five years in prison for trying to shoot his 4-year-old son’s alleged molester in 2022.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Velasquez, 42, chased down a pickup truck containing Harry Goularte and two other people for 11 miles before opening fire at an intersection in Morgan Hill. Santa Clara County prosecutors said Velasquez rammed into the pickup when they tried to flee and continued to fire, striking the driver in the torso and arm and severing a major artery.

The shooting reportedly transpired near a charter school as students left for the day. Reports indicated that Goluarte’s mother and stepfather were in the truck at the time of the shooting.

Goluarte, who was uninjured in the 2022 shooting, was criminally charged with molesting Velasquez’s 4-year-old son. The boy said the repeated assaults occurred at Goularte’s mother’s home daycare in San Martin, where Goularte also resides. Velasquez’s son reportedly accused Goluarte of molesting him “100 times” — adding that he witnessed Goluarte take other children into the bathroom.

On Monday, Velasquez pleaded no contest to attempted murder, assault, and various weapons charges. TMZ reported that prosecutors sought 30 years to life, while the defense requested probation and time served.

Prosecutors said investigators found searches for “sexual assault case where victims family fights back” and “sexual assault cases where victims family retaliates” in Velasquez’s phone.

Velasquez has already served more than three years in jail for the 2022 shooting, meaning he will spend less than two more years incarcerated.

Goularte’s trial is scheduled to begin in June. Despite prosecutors’ objections, the Los Angeles Times reported that he remains free under GPS monitoring as he awaits trial.
