Columbia University students return amid new campus policies

() Columbia University students have returned to campus shortly after the Ivy League school agreed to a host of policy changes.

The directives came from the Trump administration, which pulled $400 million in research grants following the university’s response to alleged antisemitic protests on campus in 2024.

U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said Sunday that Columbia is now “on the right track” toward receiving federal funding again.

Returning students must now abide by new campus policies, which include more campus police officers, who have the power to arrest students.

Protests are banned inside and directly outside of academic buildings, and students participating in demonstrations are not allowed to wear face coverings unless for religious or health reasons.

The list of policy changes was outlined in a four-page compliance letter that was released by the university Friday.

On the opening day of the Spring semester, no one can get on campus unless you have a student or faculty ID. In addition to that, an expansion of the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies will occur, and the university has agreed to adopt an official definition of antisemitism.
