Ian Hislop, the sharp-witted team captain of Have I Got News For You, has opened up about the “worst guests” that have graced the long-standing BBC programme. The prominent journalist and television star, has held his role since the show’s inception in 1990, and encountered an array of guest presenters and participants.

This includes big names such as David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Katherine Ryan, Ed Balls, Stephen Merchant, Warwick Davis, Danny Dyer, Jess Phillips, and Gary Neville. During his recent attendance at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards on Tuesday, Ian was pressed about memorable guests. Which prompted him to unveil the best and worst guests on the comedy quiz show throughout its 620 episodes.

The captain recalled one stand-out guest: “My favourite guest was William Shatner, Captain Kirk from Star Trek.”

The legendary actor apparently found himself somewhat lost on the set of the satirical quiz show: “He had no idea who we were. He didn’t know any of the news stories and was incredibly funny, and he actually sang.”

However, the Star Trek star’s appearance was double-edged, as Ian admitted: “He’d just released an album, so I think he was probably both the best and the worst guest ever.”

The 64-year-old added to The Independent that this came after a less humorous event as some months before Ian had sustained a head injury courtesy of an electric bike.

The incident took place in December when Ian was struck by a fast-moving bike and taken swiftly for medical attention.

Soon after, he was spotted donning a bandage across his head during a day out with his wife, Victoria Hislop, to which a spokesperson confirmed his injury.

According to The Sun, that stated: “[Ian was] hit by an electric bike whilst crossing the road yesterday afternoon”.

Ian, who had already endured a shocking encounter, believed he had been dealt a terrifying hand when he thought he might have been shot in the back of a London taxi.

An eyewitness told the MailOnline: “I just saw the taxi in the street – it was parked just up there. My colleague spotted it – all of the window at the back was smashed in, just a little black cab. I think I saw it at about 10:30am – with all the police alongside.”

The Metropolitan Police later stated there was “no evidence of a firearms discharge at this time,” and the presenter expressed his gratitude for the police’s swift investigation.
