SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — An investigation is underway after allegations of “inappropriate and unacceptable contact with a student” at Bluff City Elementary School, according to Sullivan County Director of Schools Chuck Carter.

Carter provided a statement to News Channel 11 on Wednesday. According to Carter, Sullivan County Schools administrators were informed of a situation that occurred at Bluff City Elementary on Tuesday.

“Specifically, after learning of possible unprofessional conduct during which a teacher assistant made inappropriate and unacceptable contact with a student, the school system immediately reported the same to both local law enforcement and to the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services,” Carter wrote.

A letter was sent to the employee on the same day as part of the school board’s policy.

According to Carter, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office provided News Channel 11 with more information. A sheriff’s office spokesperson said an alleged assault on a student by a teaching assistant occurred on Tuesday at the school.

The sheriff’s office identified the teaching assistant as Margaret Widener Osborne, 38, of Bluff City. She was found and arrested on Wednesday afternoon and will be booked into the Sullivan County Jail.
