GIBSON CITY, Ill. (WCIA) — Gibson City officials are still moving along with restoring one historic site, and now they’re adding in new windows.

Nearly two years ago, the Gibson City Restoration Association Board said they wanted to redevelop the Burwell Building into something special for the community. Currently, they’re still undecided on what it will turn into once completed.

However, many people have expressed they’d like to see the opera house reopen along with a list of other businesses. The building is more than 140-years-old, and one board member said it has provided people in the city a lifetime of memories.

“We need it to keep downtown alive,” said Terri Ashmore of the Gibson City Restoration Association. “There’s not many downtowns left, but this town really supports us doing this.”

The Gibson City Restoration Association said the project could take up to three years to finish. Ashmore said right now, the estimated cost is about $500,000.
