A Nursing student in Agbor, Delta State, is reportedly facing expulsion for refusing to acknowledge Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, as “mummy” during her visit to the school.

According to a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), the incident occurred during an event attended by the First Lady. As a song honoring her was sung, students were expected to chant, “Na our mama be this.”

However, instead of following the lyrics, they responded with “Na your mama be this,” signaling their refusal to recognize her in that capacity.

Days after the event, reports surfaced that the students involved were being queried.

Allegedly, an official letter from the school’s authorities addressed to Student Nurse Osato Edobor cited her involvement in recording, singing, and posting an “unofficial response” to the song on TikTok.

The letter, which has been widely shared online, states:

It has come to the notice of the school authority that you, Student Nurse Osato Edobor, on March 25, 2025, during the official visit of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, at the Dome Event Center, Asaba, for the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribution of 10,000 Professional Kits (Crocs and Scrubs) to Midwives across Nigeria’s South-South Zone, engaged in a malicious act of recording, singing, and posting an unofficial response to a song during the First Lady’s arrival (as found on your TikTok page).”

This is a punishable offence as outlined in the Student Handbook under standardized disciplinary actions for certain offences (No. 8, Page 21).”

“You are, therefore, required to provide a written explanation in triplicate within 24 hours of receiving this letter, stating why disciplinary action should not be taken against you.”

As the news spread online, concerned individuals flooded the comment section, sharing their opinions on the matter.

See some reactions below:

@Haso_0012: “First of all, the song they’re talking about ain’t even an official song, secondly, first lady wasn’t even in the video she posted & even if she was in the video, how’s that an offense? What’s wrong in saying the first lady ain’t my mother?… That country is one big circus…!”

@itzFidelia: “But why try to impose a mother on them when their actual mothers are at home?”

@SAMUELEDER33268: “What rubbish, for instance, how can someone impose a mother that is not my mother on me and expect me to accept ,I beg make them rally round this nurse ooo.”

@4GOODGEOFE: “Expulsion ke? This must be a joke!!! That’s not possible sha.”

@Vynze_Cent: “Which one is unofficial response. Is it national anthem abi pledge that would have an official response?”

@Hay1573017Hay: “When you see politics as a position of respect instead of service you are wrong.”
