Sheriff’s deputies reached into a burning car to save three people after they crashed into a tree during a pursuit.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post Friday that their deputies never know when they’re going to have to switch from chasing a suspect to saving their lives.

That happened Friday morning when a police chase ended with flames.

As deputies tried to stop a car driving recklessly, they say it crashed into a tree and caught on fire.

The three people in the car had serious injuries after it caught on fire, and a deputy had some pretty bad cuts on his hands from trying to peel the windshield off to pry them out.

The chase started when a deputy tried to stop a car driving recklessly on Pounds Hammock Road Southeast of Lake City.

Dashcam video shows the car runs a red light, veers into a ditch and smashes into a tree.

Three people were in the car, so deputies had to switch their focus to getting them out of the car safely.

Body camera video shows one of the passengers screaming in pain as the flames build under the hood of the car.

One deputy used a fire extinguisher to try to control the flames, while the other worked to pull the passenger from underneath an airbag.

The deputy who started the chase ran to get another fire extinguisher while a sergeant continued to work on pulling the last passenger out.

A sergeant pounded on the front windshield to try to break the glass. He reached his hands into the flames to try to pry it off, cutting his hands in the process.

He’s eventually able to get it open so the passenger can pull his arm out from the front of the dashboard so they could drag him out.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says the driver faces criminal charges.
