A NSW community has been rocked after a popular teen triathlete, who had recently competed in a New Zealand half-ironwoman, was found dead in a Central Coast creek.

Police from Brisbane Water Police District have launched an investigation after officers found the body of a 19-year-old woman submerged in Erina creek at about 5pm on Sunday, March 23.

A crime scene was established and, while the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are unconfirmed, a spokesperson said a report will be prepared for the coroner. It’s understood officers are not treating her death as suspicious.

The young woman, who has been identified on social media as Audrey Griffin, was with her friends over the weekend and last spotted around 2am on Sunday at Gosford Hotel.

Ms Griffin had finished a tough, international New half-ironman at Taupo, NZ, in 6 hours, 40 minutes and 32 seconds two weeks before her death, placing 194th out of 295 women.

A Central Coast community page described her as a ‘determined athlete, talented student and well-liked teenager’ who was a member of Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club and the Terrigal Sharks Rugby League Club.

The page said that, after completing high school in 2023, Ms Griffin split her time between training, a part-time job at Crown Plaza Terrigal and studying at the University of Technology Sydney.

Ms Griffin was also a former teammate on the ladies 3 team for Gosford Water Polo, with the club sharing a statement on Friday.

‘Audrey participated in a wide variety of sports and always bought a smile to those around her,’ the club said.

‘This tragedy has affected the many people who were fortunate enough to know Audrey.

‘Our thoughts are with Audrey’s family and her extensive network of friends across the Central Coast community.’

The club held a minute of silence before its L3 grand final on Saturday as a mark of respect.

Players keen to wear a black armband for the game were also offered tape.

Locals shared an outpouring of condolences on social media for the popular athlete.

‘Rest In Peace beautiful girl,’ one user said.

‘Sending condolences and strength to her family and friends at this devastating time and hope they get more answers soon.’

Another commenter said: ‘This is just unfathomable.’

NSW Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
