Miley Cyrus teases new album with eerie first song and music video

On Monday morning, Miley Cyrus released her new song and music video for Prelude, which notably featured no singing but rather a significant amount of dialogue, coupled with abundant imagery of flowers.

It was a big tease for what her ninth studio album Something Beautiful will be about.

Some critics accused Cyrus of overhyping her upcoming album, with one fan on YouTube commenting, ‘She’s dropping bread crumbs and we’re the pigeons eating it up. I can’t wait,’ while another expressed excitement by stating, ‘MOTHER IS HYPING US TF UP.’

Fans were taken aback by the retro sound of the song, likening it to a warm-up for a Broadway musical from the 1980s. One devoted follower mentioned, ‘That is not what I expected,’ while another admitted to being ‘Shocked by this vibe.’

Then there were these flattering comments on Instagram: ‘Iconic Art absolutely amazing!’ and, ‘I cannot wait for this album. It seems like I a perfect mix of pop, fashion.’

Cyrus was seen in a sparkly headdress and gown that looked like she was costumed for an entrancing musical.

The Instagram caption read: ‘Miley Cyrus releases “Prelude” the first song and visual from her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful available May 30, 2025.’

‘The film’s cinematography is helmed by Benoît Debie, adding to its striking visual narrative. Prelude is now available on all streaming platforms.’

Last week Miley shared a bold new image for Something Beautiful.

The Flowers singer, 32, appeared to be covered in icicles but in actuality she wore vintage 1997 Thierry Mugler couture.

‘Miley Cyrus unveils the artwork for her highly anticipated ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, set for release on May 30, 2025, via Columbia Records.

‘The album features 13 original tracks and is executive produced by Miley Cyrus and Shawn Everett,’ the caption read.

Miley’s last album, Endless Summer Vacation was released in March 2023 and contained the massive hit Flowers.

Flowers spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and broke numerous streaming records.

Flowers won the Grammy last year for record of the year and best pop solo performance, while the album was nominated for album of the year and best pop vocal album.

As successful as Flowers was, the song and Cyrus are now facing a lawsuit brought by Tempo Music Investments, a stakeholder in Bruno Mars’ 2013 hit single When I Was Your Man.

Tempo filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Miley’s single, accusing it of ‘intentionally copying’ Mars’ song.

The lawsuit focuses on the lyrics in the chorus: ‘I can buy myself flowers/ Write my name in the sand/ Talk to myself for hours/ Say things you don’t understand/ I can take myself dancing/ And I can hold my own hand/ Yeah, I can love me better than you can.’

Mileys lyrics appear to be modeled after Mars’ chorus: ‘That I should have bought you flowers/ And held your hand/ Should have gave you all my hours/ When I had the chance/ Take you to every party ’cause all you wanted to do was dance.’

Miley’s attorneys filed to dismiss the case in November, arguing that the plaintiff doesn’t hold the exclusive rights of the song.

However a judge has dismissed this argument, noting a critical ‘misunderstanding’ regarding the meaning of ‘exclusive rights,’ according to documents obtained by The Mirror US.

The ruling clarified: ‘Ownership of “exclusive rights” is not to be conflated with “exclusive ownership” of rights.’

‘The “exclusive rights” are what is owned collectively by the co‐owners’ and Tempo became one of the co-owners when it bought the co-songwriter Phillip Lawrence’s catalog.

The lawsuit can now proceed with Tempo and the other songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack as the plaintiffs.

Bruno Mars is also a credited writer on the song but he is not involved in the litigation.

In other Flowers-related news, the Los Angeles-area home where Miley shot her Flowers music video has been sold.

The four bedroom, six bathroom San Fernando Valley mansion served as the backdrop for her hit song, rumored to be about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth and released in January 2023.

In the video, Miley strips down to a black lingerie set for a swim in the pool, works out in the home gym, and also appears in a sweltering shower scene.

The property was rented by beloved crooner Frank Sinatra from 1960-1964, according to TMZ, but per other accounts he may have leased it for a decade.

Featuring 6,661 sprawling square footage, it brings in up to $1.2 million for homeowners who rent it out for Hollywood shoots.

The luxurious pad is now referred to as Byrdview and has undergone a huge remodel since Sinatra’s 1960s heyday.

It has appeared in the hit AMC drama Mad Men as well as in music videos for A-listers including Mariah Carey, Usher and Rihanna.

The mansion is perched on a hilltop with 360-degree views over LA, the mountains, and the surrounding 3,000 acres of nature preserve.
