CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Track and field athletes from all over Illinois competed in Bloomington at the annual Top Times meet to close out the month of March.

The meet serves as an unofficial barometer for coaches on their teams’ progress with less than two months until the state finals. For the coaches at Centennial High School, it was a weekend that proved the Chargers are right on track.

Centennial’s 4x200m relay team finished first, with first leg runner Nina Brown claiming the individual 200-meter title.

“The girls have worked really hard,” said girls’ head coach Danielle Murchison. “They literally have had PR after PR. It’s exciting to see, some of those girls I was looking at their times from last year and the years prior to and to see how much they’ve grown from that.”

Senior Voldy Makabu competed in the high jump, jumping the seventh-highest indoor height in the state this year for a first-place finish.

“I think we have a team that we’re deep, we’re deep in jumps, not just high,” said boys’ head coach Joshua Sterling. “We have some long jumpers, triple jumpers, our relays are loaded if we can stay healthy and focused. Sky’s the limit.”

The state finals are May 22-24 at EIU’s O’Brien Field.
