BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — The region is a step closer to securing a new airline offering at Tri-Cities Airport (TRI).

The Bristol, Virginia City Council committed $75,000 on Monday to support a local organization called BRIDGE’s efforts to fund an additional airline at TRI.

The BRIDGE organization has been working to raise $2 million, which its leadership previously told News Channel 11 would fund the airline for two years.

The commitment from Bristol, Virginia, comes just days after Washington County, Tenessee, agreed to fund $240,000 to the effort. Sullivan County previously committed the same amount, and Kingsport vouched for $250,000.

The organization faces a time crunch, however, as an April 7 deadline looms to meet the $2 million committed fundraising goal.

With Bristol’s commitment, BRIDGE still needs to raise a little less than $1.2 million within the next week to make the deal a success. BRIDGE said previously it relied on donations from local government bodies as well as private sector commitments.

Several county and city governments haven’t decided yet whether to support the effort.
