Fans loved The Resident for its charming lead actor (Matt Czuchry of Gilmore Girls fame), high-stakes drama and smart critiques of health care bureaucracy.

If you’ve finished the show and you’re looking for a new binge, try one of these great medical dramas streaming on Peacock, Max and Philo.

New Amsterdam (2018 – 2023)

Ryan Eggold stars as Dr. Maximus “Max” Goodwin, a doctor who is determined to cut through red tape and provide patients with the best possible care.

The titular New Amsterdam Hospital is based on Bellevue Hospital, a famous New York City institution that treats everyone from law-abiding members of the public to inmates on Rikers Island. The show ran for five seasons, so there’s plenty of content to fill the Resident-shaped hole in your heart.

Watch New Amsterdam on Peacock.

The Pitt (2025)

This new Max original series is like 24 meets Grey’s Anatomy – each episode takes place in real time during one hour of a 15-hour shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Hospital.

Noah Wyle, who appeared as John Carter in ER for all 15 seasons, returns to the medical genre with aplomb as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, a senior attending who is still reeling from his traumatic experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pitt has already been renewed for a second season, and it holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nurse Jackie (2009 – 2015)

Edie Falco (The Sopranos) was nominated for six Emmys performance in Nurse Jackie and took home the statue in 2010. This dramedy series critiques the failures of the medical system as Jackie endeavors to get her patients the care they need. Meanwhile, Jackie is dealing with a struggle of her own – her addiction to prescription drugs.

New Amsterdam Sequel About Max Daughter in the Works

NBC/YouTube New Amsterdam Hospital might be opening its doors once more. A spinoff of New Amsterdam, the beloved medical drama which bowed last year, is in development at NBC, Deadline reports. Creator/showrunner David Schulner is behind the sequel, which will follow Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin, as she takes over her father’s […]

Nurse Jackie portrays addiction in a smart, nuanced way that won it critical acclaim. Eve Best (House of the Dragon) and Merritt Wever (The Walking Dead) round out a cast of fascinating, complex characters.
