SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A Spartanburg County councilman was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with an incident that occurred during Hurricane Helene.

The Spartanburg Police Department charged 35-year-old Monier Abusaft with third-degree assault & battery. An investigation was initiated on Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, when officers responded to a residence on Bomar Avenue for a disturbance with weapons.

Upon arrival, a homeowner reported to officers that Abusaft assaulted him.

According to the incident report, the homeowner asked Abusaft not to drive on his property to avoid a downed tree due to the aftermath of Helene. Abusaft reportedly exited his vehicle and an argument ensued.

Police said during the argument, Abusaft allegedly grabbed a trash can and shoved it into the homeowner’s leg and abdomen.

Two witnesses reported similar recollections of the assault to authorities.

One of the two witnesses had also recorded the incident, where the footage captured the license plate of Abusaft’s truck along with the phrase “Mo Your Attorney” decals on both sides of the vehicle.

Abusaft was booked Wednesday, April 2, into the Spartanburg County Detention Center, where he was later released.
