DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Demolition on one of the most iconic buildings in Danville is set to begin. The city says phase one will start Monday, but with two buildings set to come down, they’re starting smaller.

The city isn’t tearing down Bresse Tower in this phase. Instead, they’ll be demolishing the courthouse annex building next to it. Danville Public Works said they’ll start moving in equipment on Monday.

While this is happening, the south end of Vermilion St. by Main St. will be shut down. Parking will also not be available. Public works said this will last around two weeks and one local business owner gave his thoughts on if he thinks the shutdowns will affect them.

“A lot of people come here to borrow money, and sometimes they have to carry some heavy objects in. And the shorter the route to get here, the better,” said Downtown Diamond and Pawn owner Kent Dukes. “If they shut down the south end of the street and they leave the north end open, they’ll still be able to get here in a decent amount of time.”

Dukes said he hopes the empty space turns into parking lots. He thinks they would help bring more business downtown.

Public Works said access to the courthouse and all downtown shops will be available throughout the whole project. But they say to allow more time to get to your destination because of routes being adjusted.

This is also just the plan for phase one, the city says they’ll be announcing further phases of the project as demolition proceeds.
