Prince Andrew demanded meeting with MI5 over Chinese spy scandal — why it didn't happen

Prince Andrew insisted on having a personal meeting with Sir Ken McCallum, the director of the UK’s Security Service MI5, following allegations that a close confidant of his was involved in espionage on behalf of China.

The disgraced Duke of York, 65, was embroiled in yet another scandal when Yang Tengbo — the former working royal’s business adviser — was sensationally banned from entering the UK following an MI5 investigation.

Andrew set up the meeting to learn more about security concerns surrounding Tengbo, whom he had known for years, The Telegraph reports.

The meeting was penciled in for June 2024 with McCallum — who eventually canceled it due to the country’s surprise general election at the time, called by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The election required the MI5’s full attention, resulting in Andrew’s meeting never being rearranged, the outlet adds.

The former working royal was largely kept in the dark about his former adviser despite boasting the highest security clearance.

Still, had a meeting taken place between Andrew and the Secret Service chief, it would have raised alarm bells given that Tengbo was under investigation by the domestic intelligence service.

Tengbo was detailed at a British airport in late 2021. He was forced to surrender his phone and other devices for investigation.

As a result, officials banned Tengbo from returning to the UK in February 2023, saying his connection to the royals was a “serious breach of national security.”

At the time, British officials believed he was a member of the Chinese Communist Party and had secretly worked for its United Front Work Department.

In February, it emerged that Andrew held a business meeting with China’s ambassador to the UK just days before his links to an alleged Chinese spy became public.

The duke reportedly hosted Ambassador Zheng Zeguang at the Royal Lodge on Dec. 9 to meet with Middle East investment firm Waterberg-Stirling.

The meeting took place just three days before court papers highlighted Andrew’s close ties to Tengbo.

The disgraced royal previously invited his former business adviser to his birthday party in 2020, where the man allegedly told Andrew that he couldn’t act on his behalf when dealing with potential Chinese investors.

The duke has since faced fresh calls to leave the Royal Lodge, where he has lived since 2004.
