BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide Thursday evening.

Just after 5 p.m., North Precinct officers responded to a person shot call at an apartment complex in the 2100 block of 29th Avenue North.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a concerned family member of the victim, who stated they had not seen or heard from the victim since Wednesday. The family member forced entry into the apartment, where they discovered the victim unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that officers had been dispatched to the location the night before on a report of shots fired. Multiple officers spoke with community members who reported hearing shots fired in the apartment complex.

Detectives are working to determine if the victim was targeted or an innocent bystander.

Anyone with additional information on this case is encouraged to contact the BPD at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
