A California woman who was shot by police while they searched a Los Angeles neighborhood for a suspect was identified as Jillian Shriner, 51, wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, 59.
Jillian Shriner, who also uses the name Jillian Lauren, found herself in the middle of a manhunt on April 8 and allegedly pointed a gun at Los Angeles police officers. According to reporting by KCAL, a local CBS affiliate, police were chasing three suspects in a hit-and-run incident on the 134 Freeway and set up a perimeter in a suburban neighborhood known as Eagle Rock.
Lauren saw one of the suspects on her property and came out of her home wielding a firearm. Police caught up to the scene and witnessed Lauren aiming her gun. According to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department, officers ordered Lauren to drop her weapon “numerous times,” but she “refused.”
Police said that was when Lauren allegedly “pointed the handgun at the officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.” Lauren was hit in the shoulder and “fled into her residence.” She eventually surrendered to police and was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. KTLA, a local Nexstar station, reported that Lauren was detained along with the family’s babysitter, who was later released from custody.
KCAL reported that after the shooting, Lauren told police that she was only trying to defend her home from an intruder.
The LAPD stated that Lauren was charged with attempted murder and was “absentee booked” while she was being treated at the hospital. Police determined that she was not involved in the hit-and-run incident.
Lauren posted $1 million bond on the same day she was booked. Her next court date is April 30. The officer-involved shooting is still being investigated.
As for the hit-and-run, one of the suspects was apprehended after being spotted in several neighborhood backyards. According to KTLA, he reportedly tried to appear as if he was just another neighbor by jumping in a pool, stripping down to his boxer shorts, and watering some plants.
Police said the two other suspects in the hit-and-run are still at large.
