A Charlton County man helped rescue crash victims after a plane overturned and caught fire at Davis Field airport.

CHARLTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Charlton County man’s life-saving efforts helped rescue the people involved in the Charlton County plane crash Thursday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Robert Phillips, a small plane overturned after a hard landing at Davis Field airport in Folkston.

There were six people onboard. Four were injured and transported to UF Health in Jacksonville.

According to the FAA, a Piper PA46 crashed while landing at Davis Field Airport in Folkston Thursday afternoon. It landed just feet away from pilot Michael Robinson’s house.

“It was a frantic, horrible mess. They were going through hell,” Robinson said.

Robinson had his wife call 911 and he quickly sprung into action.

“By the time I got here, another fella had got inside the airplane, was trying to pull him out. It was smoking. It was burning on the outside of the airplane. The son was in there, his leg was broken and he had lacerations to his face, but he was hobbling back out, could barely get out,” said Robinson, “I thought he was just getting out.  I helped pull him out the rest of the way by his arms backwards away from the airplane as he fell on the ground. He was up in there hobbling around trying to help get his father out too.”

According to the sheriff, the plane rolled and hit a tree. A fuel spill caused it to catch fire.

With Robinson’s experience as an aircraft mechanic, he helped the Georgia Forestry Department put out the fire.

“I grabbed the water hose, put the water where he needed to be to get the fire out, because it was near the pilot side of the airplane,” he said, “if we hadn’t got there. He would have been burned up.”

“Just pray for the folks involved in the crash. We think they’re going to be okay. they were alert when they left here, the two injured most seriously were alert. so we hope they’ll be fine. let’s pray for that,” Phillips said.

Despite his heroic actions, Robinson feels he just did the right thing, at the right time.

“I’m no hero. All I did was get here,” he said, “all I did was pull him away before the airplane caught on fire.”

According to the sheriff, Michael Robinson helped with the rescue from another plane crash at this same airport three years ago.

First Coast News is still working to find out the status of the four people injured and the FAA is investigating the cause of the crash.
