GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Anecio Jorden Torres, 23, was arrested early this morning after allegedly threatening to shoot his girlfriend.

On April 12, the victim, who was dating Torres, returned to his apartment at College Studios (1225 SW 1st Avenue) after going out for food and drinks. The couple began arguing, and Torres reportedly told the victim to get her things and get out.

The victim told a responding Gainesville Police Department officer that Torres became impatient and pushed her, causing her to fall into some furniture and bruise her hip. She said he tried to drag her out of the apartment, but she broke free, ran into the bathroom, and locked the door.

The victim said she heard Torres outside the bathroom door, racking the slide of a pistol while saying he would shoot her and himself; she said she was in extreme fear for her life.

The victim said she walked out of the bathroom, saw that Torres was holding the gun’s magazine in one hand and the pistol in the other, and took the pistol. One bullet fell on the floor, and the victim said Torres grabbed the gun from her and pushed her back into the bathroom.

The victim said that “out of panic”, she threw a wine bottle at Torres as he walked out of the apartment with the pistol concealed in his pants.

When Torres returned to the apartment a short time later, the victim was reportedly on the phone with a 911 call-taker, and Torres allegedly put the gun in a dresser drawer and left on foot.

The responding officer reported that the victim had some bruises on her hip and there was a bullet on the floor near the bathroom door; a broken wine bottle was near the front door. The officer also reported that some furniture had been shifted, as if it had been bumped.

When the officer asked where the gun was, the victim opened the dresser drawer and the officer reportedly saw a handgun and a short-barreled shotgun in the drawer; there was also a loaded magazine on a nearby desk.

While an officer waited at the apartment for a search warrant to be completed, Torres reportedly returned, about four hours after the incident.

A search incident to arrest reportedly produced a bullet in Torres’s pocket that was identical to the ammunition in the handgun.

Post Miranda, Torres reportedly said he left the victim at his apartment because she was mad and went to hang out with friends downtown. He initially said he never touched her and denied handling his gun at any time during the argument, but he reportedly later admitted that he had dragged the victim and told her to get out; he also admitted handling his gun while the victim was in the bathroom, but “only to make it safe.”

Torres reportedly said at first that he left without incident but later said the victim threw a wine bottle at him. He reportedly said that he never made any threatening statements while handling the gun; he admitted that he left the apartment when he realized the victim had called the police.

The officer reported that Torres “kept changing the subject, saying, ‘But yeah you see how cooperative I was when I came back,’ over and over again.”

Torres has been charged with domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery. He has no local criminal history. Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard set bail at $60,000.
