WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — A Lake Wales man was arrested Tuesday in connection to a fatal crash that happened in Winter Haven in January.
The Polk County Sheriff’s office responded to the crash early in the morning of Jan. 25 on State Road 60 at Logistics Parkway.
Witnesses told deputies that Sergio Nino Ramirez, 27, was driving the wrong way when he collided head-on with a car driven by Orli Dagoberto Argueta Sanchez, 35, of Honduras. Sanchez died in the crash.
Ramirez’s blood alcohol content level measured at 0.12, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives said crash data retrieved from his car showed that he did not brake or take any other action to avoid the collision.
“An innocent man was killed in that horrendous crash nearly three months ago, but Sergio Ramirez’s life goes on. My detectives are the best at what they do, and they have built a very strong case that should result in Ramirez getting the justice he deserves,” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.
Ramirez was charged with DUI causing death and vehicular homicide. He was booked into the Polk County Jail, where he is being held without bond ahead of his first court appearance on Wednesday.
