ST. LOUIS – For 11-year-old Ben, the turf at The Dome at America’s Center transformed into a field of dreams.

After years of medical struggles, Ben got the surprise of a lifetime: the chance to meet his football hero, Patrick Mahomes, thanks to Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas.

Ben was diagnosed with a rare nervous system disorder, Lebrune Syndrome, in April 2021, a life-altering diagnosis that’s made every day a challenge.

His condition causes inflammation in the brain, and over time, it has taken away his ability to walk, talk and eat on his own. He now relies entirely on his family for daily care.

Despite it all, Ben’s spirit continues to shine.

“Just having him walk and talk and do all these things, and to watch all of that be taken away from him, it’s been very difficult,” said his mother, Ashley Dike. “But to know Ben is to know his smile and his joy. Even though it’s been incredibly difficult and frustrating for him, he still somehow is smiling through it.”

That smile lit up the Dome on Monday, as Make-A-Wish, in partnership with Spectrum and Explore St. Louis, revealed the big news on the Battlehawks’ field: Ben’s wish to meet Patrick Mahomes is coming true.

“Everyone has goosebumps,” said Ed Skapinok, Chief Marketing Officer for Explore St. Louis. “We’re just all so excited that it’s finally here. It was a special moment when the family came in.”

With the Battlehawks’ field set up inside the Dome, the setting was perfect for a magical announcement.

“Since we’ve got the turf out for the Battlehawks’ season, we brought Ben and his family here to learn that his wish is getting granted,” Skapinok added.

For Ben’s family, it’s a bright memory during a difficult journey. One filled with cross-country hospital visits, emotional hurdles and a relentless fight.

“We’re super excited that he gets to meet Patrick,” Dike said, smiling. “It’s something we’ve all been looking forward to.”
