AUGUSTA, Ga. () – There aren’t many women coaching varsity boys basketball in the state of Georgia. Former Cross Creek girls basketball coach Kim Schlein is now one who is.

Schlein, the former longtime Cross Creek girls basketball coach who brought multiple region championships and a state title to the school, was announced as Augusta Prep’s new boys high school basketball coach on Wednesday afternoon.

After retiring from Cross Creek where she also served as the school’s athletic director and a track and field coach, Schlein came over to Augusta Prep where she’s finishing her first year as head varsity track and field coach as well as head junior varsity boys basketball coach and assistant coach under Sam Gruber who resigned after this past season.

During Schlein’s 20 years at the helm of the Cross Creek program, she achieved 16 state tournament appearances, five trips to the Elite Eight and one Final Four berth the year she guided the Razorbacks to a state crown.

Gruber stepped down after a 2024-25 season that saw the Cavaliers finish 19-8 overall and 7-1 in the Georgia Independent Athletic Association. Augusta Prep fell to eventual GIAA Class AA state champion Furtah Prep in the GIAA Final Four.

Though no official statistics are immediately available, Schlein is believed to be one of very few women coaching high school varsity basketball in Georgia regardless of the association.

Krystal Wells is head boys basketball coach for the Georgia High School Association’s North Atlanta High School.

We’ll have more on Schlein’s hire, including reaction coaching during our 6, 10 and 11 p.m.
