“I’m heartbroken to see the tragedy unfolding at FSU today,” Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan said.

FLORIDA, USA — Jacksonville area officials, including Mayor Donna Deegan and Sheriff T.K. Waters, have released statements following a deadly “active shooter” situation on the campus of Florida State University Thursday.

Find their statements below.

Mayor Donna Deegan

“I’m heartbroken to see the tragedy unfolding at FSU today,” Deegan said. “As an alum who also had a child at Florida State, my heart goes out to the families and students terrorized by this senseless act of violence. I’m continuing to monitor the news out of Tallahassee and my prayers are with everyone there.”

Sheriff T.K. Waters

“Although we are not in the same city, the Jacksonville community is deeply connected to Florida State University,” Waters stated. “The men and women of JSO stand with the FSU shooting victims, students, teachers, administrators, and loved ones. This incident of senseless violence, a tragedy for all Floridians, cries out for justice. As our law enforcement colleagues conduct their investigation, our agency stands ready to support and assist.”

Representative Angie Nixon

“Everyone be safe in Tallahassee right now. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims that have been injured during the shooting at FSU,” Nixon said in a post on X.

In a separate X post, Nixon said: “My heart is heavy hearing about the shooting on Florida State University’s campus. Two lives taken, others wounded, and many shaken by this act of violence. I am praying for the victims, their families, and the entire FSU community. We cannot grow numb to this. Students deserve to feel safe in their classrooms, not fear for their lives. This is a public safety issue. I will continue to push for the changes we need to keep our communities safe.”

Representative John Rutherford

“I am praying for the safety of all students and faculty at FSU, as well as the first responders on the scene. My thoughts and prayers are with those injured as we learn more,” Rutherford said in a post on X.

Jacksonville City Councilman Rory Diamond

“Prayers for our friends at @Florida State. Looks ugly,” Diamond said in a post on X.

Jacksonville City Council Vice President Kevin Carrico

“Shocked to hear the news coming out of Tallahassee at my Alma Matter Florida State,” Carrico said in a post on X. “Praying for all those affected and thankful to our law enforcement officers for preventing what could have been so much worse.”

Former Mayor Lenny Curry

“Molly and I are thankful our son is safe!” Curry said in a post on X. “Reports of an active shooter on any campus are a parents worst nightmare. Follow all local guidance. Shelter in place. Stay safe. Thank you to our brave first responders for responding to the situation. @FloridaState”

Board of Governors of the State University System member Paul Renner

“Adriana and I are heartbroken over the tragedy that took place on the @FloridaState campus this afternoon,” former Florida House of Representatives Speaker Paul Renner said in a post on X. “As we await further reports, we will continue to pray for the students, faculty, families, first responders, and FSU community.”
