TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. () — Orange Crush on Tybee Island kicks off Saturday, but many partygoers already made their way onto the island Friday.

’s crew was on Tybee all Friday and there was a heavy law enforcement presence. This is the first time Orange Crush organizers are operating under an official permit.

Since early this week, Tybee Island officials have been preparing for an event that brings thousands of people to the island each year. In their final press conference ahead of the busy weekend, officials touched on three main topics: Keeping the island clean, traffic and barricades blocking parking

“It’s gonna take time,” Mayor Brian West said. “If it goes well this year, it’s going to take time to build that reputation of having a good event.”

The permit comes with some restrictions. Barricades have been placed up and down Highway 80.

Similar to previous years, officials said there will be a heavier police presence, an emergency-only lane on Highway 80, and barricades blocking parking down the busy street.

“They started a couple of events ago with the middle lane being open for ambulances and police, which I think is a great idea,” Tybee Island resident Laura Mills said. “But this is heavy duty. There seems to be a lot more law enforcement and stuff, which in the past we’ve needed.”

Tybee visitor and Savannah resident Demetria Eason said, “I think it’s just a little overwhelming for people who come out here on the daily or just come out here on the weekends. It’s just a little overwhelming to see so much police enforcement today.”
