GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — A man has been sentenced to serve 377 months in prison after a 2023 carjacking in Bristol, Tennessee.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Charles Nile Mixon, 49, of Bristol, Virginia was sentenced on Wednesday. He was convicted on the following charges by a jury in October 2024:

  • Carjacking
  • Using and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Possession of a stolen firearm

Additionally, the jury found that due to previous convictions on violent crimes, Mixon was established as an armed career criminal.

Following his more than 31 years of imprisonment, Mixon will be on supervised release for five years, the DOJ reports.

The DOJ stated in a news release that witnesses, court documents and evidence used in the trial revealed Mixon carjacked a woman at gunpoint in the parking lot of a Taco Bell in Bristol, Tennessee, on May 24, 2023.

He briefly held her at gunpoint in the vehicle before a police chase ensued, and he fled into Virginia. Mixon abandoned the carjacked vehicle, according to the release.

The DOJ reports he told a relative the next day that he had taken the relative’s firearm and used it in the carjacking. The relative then talked to law enforcement.

Mixon was arrested after another chase, this one starting in Bristol, Virginia and ending in Bristol, Tennessee. Police found the stolen firearm on Mixon when he was arrested, the DOJ reports.

“The sentence imposed is a powerful reminder that violent offenses, such as this carjacking, will not be tolerated,” U.S. Attorney Francis M. Hamilton stated in the release. “Individuals who repeatedly commit violent offenses are a threat to public safety, and our office will continue to prosecute those individuals vigorously.”
