URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — After a 14-year-old was arrested for having cannabis-infused edibles on Urbana School District property, Urbana Police said the teenager had more than 500 grams of edibles and may have been trying to give them out.

They also said a student needed medical attention after taking one. The dosage makes them particularly harsh on kids. A typical edible can contain as much as six times the recommended THC levels for adults, which means these products hit children much harder.

The substance abuse and mental health services administration said more than 15% of people who start using marijuana in any way before the age of 18 will become addicted. They also said symptoms include paranoia, not breathing for ten or more seconds at a time and more.

John Parks, an addiction counselor at Carle Health, works with a team to help people fight substance abuse problems.

“Our case management social work team, they have a handle on so many wonderful resources that are available to clients or parents of underage clients,” Parks said. “We make those resources available to them upon request or when we meet with those clients.”

Some common forms of edibles are gummy candies, chocolate bars and baked goods.

Pediatricians said if your child does consume edibles in any form to call the poison control hotline for help. They recommend taking them to the emergency room immediately if their symptoms become severe.
