On Easter Sunday, President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a message of hope to Ukrainians, encouraging them to remain optimistic about the return of peace to their country. Zelensky acknowledged the challenging 1,152 days of war that Ukraine has endured but emphasized the importance of perseverance.

Dressed in a traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanka shirt, Zelensky stood before Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv as he expressed his belief that Ukraine never loses faith. In a heartfelt social media video, the Jewish president shared his conviction in the unity and strength of the Ukrainian people, highlighting their resilience in the face of adversity.

Zelensky’s poignant words centered on the enduring faith that Ukrainians hold in each other, in solidarity among men and women, and in the belief that goodness will ultimately prevail over evil. He conveyed a message of unwavering hope and determination, urging his fellow citizens to remain steadfast in their pursuit of peace and a brighter future.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a surprise one-day ceasefire in Ukraine on Saturday for Easter – which falls on the same day this year for Orthodox and Western churches.

But Zelensky said earlier on Sunday that the Russian army was making a pretense of a pause in hostilities, continuing overnight attempts to inflict front-line losses on Ukraine.

“We know what we are defending. We know what we are fighting for. For whom and for whose sake,” Zelensky said.

“The day of life will come. The day of peace. The day of Ukraine. A day that lasts a century. And we will be able to gather together again. At one table. On a peaceful Easter.”
