Juan Soto, Mets overcome bullpen slipup to sweep Cardinals

The Mets just keep on rolling.

The team secured a 7-4 win against the Cardinals at Citi Field on Sunday, concluding a four-game sweep. This achievement marked their ninth victory in the first ten games played at home in Queens this season.

And thanks in part to their dominating performance over St. Louis, they’ll be in first place in the NL East when the Phillies arrive to open a series on Monday.

This win came despite a slipup from the bullpen in the seventh inning, but was redeemed by Brandon Nimmo’s go-ahead single in the bottom of the inning and then a three-run eighth that was capped by a Juan Soto two-run double.

Nimmo also preserved a two-run lead with a homer-saving catch to end the top of the sixth.

The Mets also got six strong innings from Clay Holmes, in his best outing since recasting himself as a starter this season.

Francisco Lindor also continued to heat up at the plate, with a leadoff homer, two singles and a pair of runs scored.

The Mets had a 3-0 lead after five and were up by two runs in the seventh when lefty Danny Young came in to start the inning.

With two on and one out, Young got Lars Nootbar looking and was replaced by Jose Butto, but Butto allowed a two-run double to Thomas Saggese to tie the game at 3-3.

Lindor, though, reached on a dribbler with one out in the bottom of the inning, moved to second on a walk by Soto and scored on a single up the middle by Nimmo to give the Mets the lead again.

It was the second time Nimmo delivered for the Mets on Sunday.

In the top of the sixth, St. Louis got a double by Brendan Donovan. He moved to third with one out on a wild pitch. That allowed Donovan to score on an Alec Burleson groundout to second to cut the Mets’ lead to 3-1.

Jordan Walker followed with a shot to deep left, but Nimmo made a leaping grab at the fence to rob Walker of a two-run homer that would have tied the game.

They ended up taking the lead in the seventh and then scored another run in the eighth thanks to a hustle double by Luisangel Acuña to start the inning and then a one-out RBI double by Tyrone Taylor.

Soto then helped put the game out of reach with a booming double to left-center to score two more.
