Orange Crush weekend a success, says Tybee mayor

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. () — Orange Crush is over and there is no sign of the giant party that happened on Tybee Saturday. Good news for the Island and Orange Crush organizers. It was an effort by the mayor and a team of volunteers to make sure the view was clear for Easter sunrise Sunday morning.

The beach was once full of trash. Sunday it was just full of folks enjoying the morning. A big change from some years in the past. Buddy and Sharon Miller, a couple using their metal detector to look for buried treasure, said, “The beach was pretty clean this morning, a lot cleaner than normal. But we’ve found three rings so far and three rings and two necklaces.”

“We’re trying to work towards a new attitude towards this event,” said Tybee mayor Brian West. “And a lot of people, a lot of the residents live here, you know, are good with it. But there are some that still, you know, are cautious and want to make sure that it continues to go well.”

West says a permit put in place for this year’s Orange Crush was a step in the right direction. The promoter was ordered to clean up right after the event. Mayor West told News 3 the promoter’s crew of 30 people, along with residents and city staff, had the are clear of trash around 9:00 p.m., just an hour after the party ended. “Because today’s Easter, we knew we had people coming for the services. We really wanted to be cleaned up before people came for that. You know, people come to see a sunrise service and they don’t want to see trash all over the beach.”

While there will be more discussion about the future of Orange Crush, right now Mayor West says the organizers did what they said — left the beach pristine — and he would welcome them back again next year.
