Private investigator sheds light on recovery efforts of missing man found in Canyon

DENVER (KDVR) Last Sunday, rangers and several other agencies recovered human remains in a wilderness area at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park near the town of Montrose.

affiliate KDVR is hearing from the private investigation company that was involved in helping to identify a Denver man’s body a week after he was found dead in western Colorado.

Officials confirmed the body was that of Jordan Marsters, a 31-year-old who was first reported missing on Feb. 15.

Marsters moved from Maine to Denver last October and kept in contact with his tight-knit family. After his mother didn’t receive calls from him like she normally would, she knew something wasn’t right.

“Jordan was a smart, smart man. He was loving, he came from this amazing, close, tight-knit family,” said Alexandra Slavin.

Slavin is a Denver-based private investigator with Slavin Private Investigations LLC. She was retained by the family and shared some memories of Jordan after the National Park Service announced recovery efforts.

“I thought it was going to be like my typical missing person case and that was not what it ended up being,” said Slavin. “It was crazy and a learning experience and it was a lot of steps, a lot of jurisdictions to be involved with and inevitably it led our investigation to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Montrose. That kind of led us to the whole world into investigations we didn’t think we were going to have to do.”

Park rangers and a member of the Black Canyon Search and Rescue Team help locate the remains in a remote location in the canyon.

“The park ranchers were absolutely phenomenal, they worked on their days off, they ice climbed, they roped,” said Slavin. “They had to work with other national parks to get a helicopter to safely rescue Jordan’s body. That’s why it took so long, it was so many logistics that went into it. There was also dangerous terrain.”

From her investigations, she says it looked like Marsters took a bus from Denver to Grand Junction and ended up in Montrose.

“We’re thinking he wanted to explore. He’s lived in Colorado since October of last year. He’s an adventurous guy who loves the outdoors,” she said.

Slavin sent some of her investigations to the same area to find out where he could be.

“The last places that Jordan was, and we put together an hour-by-hour timeline of Jordan’s whereabouts for his previous 48 hours before going missing,” Slavin said.

The news of his remains being found was devastating for the family. Slavin said Marsters’ mom was not going to give up until she found her son.

“I think it gives her answers. She finally gets to bring her son home, and give him that celebration of life and funeral that he deserves, so it’s finally giving her a little peace in such a confusing, long, drawn-out couple of months,” said Slavin. “She didn’t care if it took 20 years; she was never going to give up on finding her son.”

While police do all they can in missing persons cases, Slavin says private investigators’ roles are important in situations like these.

“We have the time, resources and the capabilities to make these phone calls, track down surveillance videos, track down witnesses that may or may not have been in contact with,” said Slavin.

A cause of death has not yet been released.

Slavin says the area where Jordan was found was so remote that she’s not sure if they would have been found without the family’s persistence and all the work from park rangers.
