SAVANNAH, Ga, () — A man says he and his friends are questioning how they’re alive after coming close to a shooting in Downtown Savannah early Sunday morning.

The shooting happened on the corner of West Bay and Jefferson Streets around 2:20 a.m., according to a spokesperson with Savannah Police Department (SPD). Ryan Castle tells News 3, he was a few blocks away from the gunshots.

“I keep asking myself, how am I alive? I’m glad that God was with me that night,” Castle said.

According to Castle, he and his friends were waiting in the Congress Street area to get food when he heard the shots. He then saw police officers running in the direction of the chaos.

Castle says they were taking cover behind buildings and cars – helping others where they could.

“There was a point where these girls were running, and we yanked them over to us and got on top of them so they didn’t get shot,” Castle said. “When I ran, I turned around and saw my buddy on the ground. I didn’t know if he got shot or not, so I went back. I’m more worried about him than myself. But, he said ‘I’m good. I’m just hiding’.”

When police got to the scene, they found 24-year-old Marquell Moultrie with a gun. He dropped the firearm when officers approached, but it was picked up by 23-year-old Malik Moultrie, who tried to run.

Both men were ultimately taken into custody. Two people were treated for minor graze wounds, according to SPD.

News 3 asked Castle if he would go out again in Savannah. He replied, “Probably not. Not for a while.”

According to a spokesperson with SPD, investigators aren’t linking the shooting to Orange Crush at this time. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 912-234-2020.
