COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) – The SC Senate Committee will meet Monday to discuss removing State Treasurer Curtis Loftis.

Loftis, who is serving his fourth term as state treasurer since being elected in 2010, has been under consideration for removal due to a nearly two billion dollar accounting error. Since the study was made public, Loftis has given many under-oath testimonies, stressing that he did not make the mistake.

7NEWS spoke with Loftis two weeks ago about the removal hearing and re-election campaign, although the treasurer has previously expressed plans to retire and not run again.

On April 10, Loftis filed an injunction with the state Supreme Court, challenging whether lawmakers can remove a duly elected official from office.

The SC Supreme Court denied Loftis’ request and ruled that the state legislature can proceed with the hearing that could remove the treasurer on Monday, April 21. Senators will lay out their case and Loftis and his lawyers will speak in front of the Senate to potentially remove him.

The House will also need to decide if it will host a hearing of its own.

It would take a two-thirds vote of both the Senate and the House to remove the treasurer.

If Loftis is removed, he is still eligible to run for re-election in 2026.
