Outlander star Caitriona Balfe's 'strong' feelings on intimate Jamie Fraser scene

Outlander actress Caitriona Balfe had some candid thoughts about a significant romantic scene in the series. The scene in question featured Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Balfe) rekindling their physical relationship after a prolonged separation.

This tender moment unfolded as Jamie wrestled with the lingering trauma of his brutal rape and torture by Captain Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), which occurred at the climax of the first season. Randall’s vicious attack aimed to shatter the bond between Jamie and Claire, but ultimately, their love endured.

The couple’s reunion took place in Paris, amidst their efforts to alter the course of history and avert the Battle of Culloden. On the Outlander podcast, executive producer Ronald D.Moore and writer Toni Graphia delved into the details of this crucial scene, reports the Irish Star.

Graphia remarked: “It was actually your idea Ron that they have sex in here [the nook] for the first time in many many months.”

She explained the rationale behind it: “The thought behind it being that it’s dark and that instead of all that talking and instead of all the analysing, let’s just break it down: ‘You and me in the dark and we have what we have and we’ll never lose that’.”

She added: “And I love that line that you put in when she says, ‘Come find me in the dark’, because it all boils down to that.”

Graphia also touched upon the portrayal of a love scene with a pregnant woman, revealing the producers’ and Balfe’s perspectives on how this intimate moment was depicted.

Graphia stated: “We didn’t want to shy away from having sex even with her pregnant belly. We wanted that to be part of it.

“Cait felt very strongly that pregnant women are sexy and we didn’t want to hide her belly in the sex scene or anything like that – like a lot of network shows do.”

She continued: “We wanted to celebrate that and show that it’s part of their love. I love this scene and we weren’t sure which episode they were going to reconnect.”

Moore also offered his perspective: “Yeah, it kept moving around in the overall structure about when their intimacy would resume.

“It took a while before it landed here and I’m glad it did. It feels organic to where the story is because now they’re operating more as a team.”

Outlander season 7 is available to buy now on Digital and is streaming on MGM+ via Prime Video now
