A 2-year-old accidentally shot himself and died after finding a gun, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An investigation is ongoing after a toddler died Sunday from what police say was an apparent accidental shooting.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a 2-year-old appeared to have found a gun and accidentally shot himself at a house on Calvary Drive on the city’s Westside. The child was taken to Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

First Coast News Crime and Safety Expert Mark Baughman explains how simple it can be to pull the trigger of a gun and the importance of gun safety.

“It depends on what type of weapon it is, if it’s a revolver and it’s cocked it doesn’t take a lot of pressure, or strength to pull that trigger,” Baughman said.

Baughman explains what law enforcement will be reviewing during the investigation.

“Investigators are collecting evidence as to who lives in the house, who had accessibility to gun, who lawfully owns the gun, all those questions need to be answered as they go,” said Baughman.

Baughman explains how common these situations could happen if a gun gets into the hands of the wrong person.

“You put trigger locks, you need to have that gun secured away from anybody that shouldn’t have access to it and I’m talking about minors, people are dealing with some type of mental defect,” said Baughman. “We see this down the line, it happens so often that guns get in the hands of the wrong people. People with guns with bad intentions or shouldn’t have them, that’s what causes this problem.”

JSO said detectives are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office and State Attorney’s Office to investigate further what led up to this tragedy.
