UPDATE, 4:14 p.m. – According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the incident on Wylie Drive Tuesday has ended “with the release of two females safely and the subject in custody without incident.”
Mason Meeks, 33, allegedly possessed a handgun near a residence on 1900 block of Wylie Drive on April 22. Meeks was wanted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office onĀ one felony warrant and five misdemeanor warrants.
RCSO was contacted because the location was within Richmond County jurisdiction, and arrived on the scene at approximately 3:15 p.m.
“SWAT Command, in coordination with RCSO Negotiators, attempted to establish direct contact with the suspect and also reached out to his parents in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully,” the sheriffs office said in a statement. “Although direct phone contact could not be made, negotiators communicated through the public address system.”
Two females exited the resident safely without incident at 3:37 p.m.
Additional charges are pending for Meeks.
Nearby homes, observers and businesses were evacuated and relocated, “out of an abundance of caution.”
AUGUSTA, Ga. () – The Richmond County SWAT team is on scene of Mike Padgett Highway and Wylie Drive with an armed barricaded subject, according to officials on Tuesday.
According to officers, Wylie Drive is shut down in both directions. People are asked to avoid the area. More information will be provided when it is available.
