Gypsy Rose Blanchard revealed that her daughter, Aurora, tested negative for 1q21.1 microdeletion, which is a genetic condition that she has. In light of the announcement, many people are wondering what 1q21.1 microdeletion is, what the symptoms are and more.

What Is 1Q21.1 Microdeletion?

1q21.1 microdeletion is “a chromosomal change in which a small piece of chromosome 1 is deleted in each cell,” according to MedlinePlus. “The deletion occurs on the long (q) arm of the chromosome in a region designated q21.1. This chromosomal change increases the risk of delayed development, intellectual disability, physical abnormalities, and neurological and psychiatric problems. However, some people with a 1q21.1 microdeletion do not appear to have any associated features.”

According to MedlinePlus, approximately 75 percent of all children with a 1q21.1 microdeletion have delayed development that often affects “the development of motor skills such as sitting, standing and walking.” Meanwhile, “the intellectual disability and learning problems associated with this genetic change are usually mild.”

Gypsy Rose Blanchard Was Diagnosed With 1Q21.1 Microdeletion in 2012

Gypsy was diagnosed with 1q21.1 microdeletion in 2012, and she wrote about the disorder in her December 2024 book, My Time to Stand. While she said that her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, tricked her into believing she had many illnesses, Gypsy did reveal her 1q21.1 microdeletion diagnosis.

“I actually do have what’s known as a microdeletion, 1q21.1, which is a chromosomal change in which a small piece of chromosome 1 is deleted in each cell,” she wrote in the book. “This microdeletion is known to ‘increase the risk of delayed development, intellectual disability, physical abnormalities, and neurological and psychiatric problems.’ Wow. What a coincidence. Every illness my mother claimed I had had fallen beneath all of these umbrellas. Except I didn’t actually have a single one of them.”

Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s Daughter Tested Negative for 1Q21.1 Microdeletion

The mother of one announced that Aurora tested negative for 1q21.1 microdeletion in a statement issued via Instagram on April 23, 2025.

Great news about Aurora! We’re overjoyed to share that our sweet girl, Aurora, has tested negative for the rare condition known as microdeletion 1q21.1,” she wrote about her daughter, whom she welcomed with Ken Urker in December 2024. “This result brings us such immense relief and gratitude. Thank you to everyone who’s kept us in your thoughts — your support has meant the world.”

The text post continued, “Aurora is happy, healthy and growing beautifully at 4 months old. We’re looking forward to cherishing every moment with her, with lighter hearts and hopeful spirits.”

After she made the announcement, Gypsy explained that there was a probable chance that Aurora would inherit 1q21.1 microdeletion from her.

“I was tested in 2012 and was positive, and again last year in October and again came back positive,” she told People in a statement. “There was a 50-50 chance that she could have inherited it so we got her tested and she came back negative, therefore, herself and her future children won’t have to worry about getting the condition that I have. It stops with me.”

Gypsy added, “We are so relieved to know that she is healthy and is meeting all of her developmental milestones perfectly.”
