SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A road in downtown Springfield has reopened after a large fire shut it down nearly a year ago.

City officials announced that 10 months after the June fire, the 400 block of East Adams Street reopened earlier this week to vehicular traffic.

“Local businesses have expressed their concerns about the impact of the extended closure, and the City thanks them for their patience and resilience,” Springfield mayor Misty Buscher said. “Reopening Adams Street is a positive milestone, and we look forward to the renewed foot traffic and economic activity in the heart of downtown.”

This also allows the Old Capitol Farmers Market also return to its original spot.

“We’re thrilled to see the east 400 block reopen, and even more excited that the Old Capitol Farmers Market will return very close to its original location. The market is a cornerstone of downtown community life, and having it back where people know and love it will bring fresh energy and visibility to our local businesses,” Carlos Ortega, Director of Downtown Springfield Inc. said.

The sidewalk on the north side of the street remains closed until repairs can be made and will stay fenced off.

City officials noted temporary or partial closures may be required to complete the ongoing work safely.
