The long search for Valerie, the missing miniature dachshund, is over — and it has ended happily.
An incredible 529 days after the dog went missing on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, she was found by a volunteer-led Kangala Wildlife Rescue group.
“After weeks of tireless efforts by Kangala Wildlife Rescue volunteers and partner organisations Valerie has been safely rescued and is fit and well,” the group said in a post on social media.
“Valerie is finally safe and able to begin her transition back to her loving parents.”

According to the group, the search involved 1,000 hours spent by volunteers, 5,000km travelled in private cars and the use of various cameras, traps, and technologies.

What happened to Valerie the dachshund?

In November 2023, Valerie, wearing a pink collar, went missing while travelling with her owners, Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock, on Kangaroo Island.
Despite a five-day search, the couple were unsuccessful in finding her, and they eventually returned home.
Earlier this year, more than 12 months after Valerie was last seen, after reports of a dachshund with a pink collar were spotted.
“Based on firsthand accounts and video evidence, we now know that Valerie is alive,” Kangala Wildlife Rescue group said in mid-March.
“She runs at the first sign of humans or vehicles, and despite the best efforts of dedicated Island locals, Valerie has been impossible to catch.”

Earlier this month, another video of the dachshund was shared showing her near a trap.

It was reported that Valerie frequently visited the site.

“She has become confident entering the large dog trap, which has been set up like her own little room with her toys and bed from home,” the rescue group said.
The search has finally concluded with the group posting a video of Valerie on Friday.
“This successful outcome highlights the vital role that wildlife rescue organisations play in our community, extending their expertise and compassion to all animals in need,” the group said.
“Valerie’s story is a reminder that hope and determination can lead to incredible results.”
