(The Hill) Almost four-in-10 Americans said that neither party is fighting for people like them, as pessimism for both major parties swells, according to a new survey released on Friday.

The new NBC News Stay Tuned Poll found that 38 percent of U.S. adults said that neither Democrats nor Republicans are fighting for people like them.

Nearly a quarter of respondents, 24 percent, said the GOP is fighting for them, while another 23 percent said the same about the Democratic Party. Just 15 percent agreed that both parties are going to bat for their constituents, according to the survey.

Among Americans who call themselves progressives first, as opposed to Democrats first, nearly two-fifths of respondents, 38 percent, think that neither political party is working on their behalf.

Those who say they are aligned more with the Make America Great Again movement first, as opposed to the Republican Party, just 23 percent said neither party is delivering on their behalf, while 67 percent said the GOP is fighting for them, the poll found.

Younger voters are pessimistic about the impact of both parties. Around 45 percent of adults ages 30-44 and 41 percent of those between age 18 and 29 said neither party is fighting or delivering for them, according to the survey.

A majority of those, 69 percent, who voted for a third-party candidate in the 2024 presidential election also said neither party is fighting on their behalf. Nearly half, 47 percent, who did not vote in the previous presidential election cycle also argued that both major parties are not fighting.

The survey found that a third of independents view the Republican Party favorably, while another 36 percent view the Democratic Party in a favorable light.

The poll was conducted from April 11-20 among 19,682 adults. The margin of error was 2.2 percentage points.
