Popular downtown brewery to be sold after 15 years of steady growth in the area

Intuition Ale Works, a Jacksonville brewery founded by Ben Davis, is being put up for sale after nearly 15 years in business.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — This story first appeared in the Florida Times-Union.

After almost a decade downtown, Intuition Ale Works is for sale.

A Facebook post Friday morning detailed the “bittersweet decision” to sell the business after “an incredible ride.”

“When I opened Intuition almost fifteen years ago, I never could have imagined what it would become,” said the post on Intuition Ale Work’s Facebook page, which featured a photo of founder Ben Davis. “I wanted to create a brewery that brought something meaningful to my hometown and create a place where friends, families and folks from all walks of life could come together and share the experience of drinking great local beer. I truly believe that we have achieved that.”

Intuition initially opened its doors in 2010 in Riverside but moved to downtown Jacksonville in 2016 as the business flourished. Since opening, the team has “tripled in size,” and its beers are “available all over the city.”

Brad Lange, chief operating officer at Intuition, said everyone is “very grateful for everything [Davis] has done, bringing us to Downtown and creating so many jobs and opportunities.”

“We’re so lucky,” Lange said. “It’s crazy to think about the last 15 years and the size of our team when we started and now we’re at 40. We have a really big team, many of whom have been with us five, 10 or 15 years. I think we’re stronger than ever.”

The location at 929 E. Bay St. has also become a go-to spot before and after sporting events, including Jacksonville Jaguars games or the Gate River Run, and for live music.

“We’re in a good spot downtown,” Lange said. “With all of the growth happening there, it’s a really good opportunity for someone to come in to a turn-key operation.”

Lange said the business still has “a ton of shows booked” for the rest of the year and is “selling as much beer as we ever have.”

“Ben will be around until a sale happens, and it’s just business as usual,” he said.

Nothing will change until the brewery is sold, the post noted, meaning it will continue brewing beer and the taproom and Bier Hall will stay open for their usual hours and events.

Lange said the priority communicated to staff is “to find the right person” to take over the brewery and that there is no timeline on that.

“We are actively seeking buyers that will maintain our company values and culture, while leading Intuition into a new era,” the post continued. “I’m sharing this now because I care deeply about our team and want to be as transparent as possible about the future of Intuition. The goal is for Intuition to move into its next chapter with strength and stability.”

It is important for a potential buyer to “keep the same culture” and “the community-engaged brand mindset,” Lange said.

“It’s a little bittersweet to imagine Intuition without [Davis],” Lange added. “He’s given the better part of his adult life to building the business, and it means a lot to him. Everyone knows he’s going to find the right person to come in.”

Davis said on Facebook that he is “eternally grateful for the tremendous support that Intuition has received over the years.”

“It’s a huge point of pride for myself and our entire staff to know how much the brand means to so many people in this city,” he said. “And please don’t forget to always drink local.”
