COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. () – After the tragedy in Columbia County on Saturday, I was able to speak with the daughter of the first law enforcement officer who died in the line of duty in Columbia County. She told me what it is like to lose a loved one who puts their life on the line daily.

“That feeling of him not being able to come home at night it really had a toll on our family, but we knew that he loved to do,” said Christine Nair, Daughter of Wesley Mack.

Corporal Wesley Mack died in the line of duty in 2004.  After finishing a traffic stop on I-20 and pulling his motorcycle back into traffic, he was hit by another vehicle. His daughter—Christine Nair— remembers getting the phone call after church.

“The pain doesn’t go away fully. Driving down I20 when you see the memorial markers that brings back pain… “Just being in the hospital with all those people. You know, sheriff’s office and everybody was making sure that we were okay, and all that stuff really helped the situation, but it was devastating at the same time,” said Nair.

Nair tells me that what happened Saturday to Deputies Brandon Sikes and Gavin White brought up emotions from what she experienced.  She wanted to tell their loved ones that although the pain will not go away, she hopes they find peace, and to keep their faith.

“They can…. Find joy and keep their faith in knowing that, you know. He was doing what he loved, I’m sure,” said Nair.

Nair says she misses her father every day and going back and reading comments about how her father impacted the community helps her get through tough times.

“I got back and read those comments sometimes, and the people that loved my dad and the infectious smile that he had. The laugh that he had. You know that helps me get through a lot of the days… I find peace in knowing that he passed doing what he loved,” said Nair.
