1 dead, 1 suspect at large following shooting in Sarasota: deputies

SARASOTA, Fla (WFLA) — One person is dead, and another is being sought by Sarasota County deputies following a shooting near an elementary school Thursday evening.

Deputies with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to the 2500 block of Colson Avenue on May 1 after receiving reports of a shooting. The street borders Emma E. Booker Elementary School.

Upon arrival, deputies found a man lying in the front yard of a home in the area. Authorities said the man, later identified as 45-year-old Reginald Graves, had suffered a gunshot wound to his chest.

Graves was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 7:54 p.m. The sheriff’s office said his family was notified.

Investigators conducted interviews and said they were able to identify a potential suspect. A warrant was issued for Trae B. Ward, 33, of Sarasota, in connection with the shooting.

As of Friday, deputies were still trying to locate Ward. Detectives were also looking for additional witnesses and surveillance video.
