After playing one season with the University of Kentucky Wildcats, Jamal Murray was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. In 2019, he signed a five-year, $170 million contract with the team. In February 2021, Murray tore his ACL during a game against the Golden State Warriors, causing him to miss the rest of that year and the following season while he recovered.
He returned to the basketball court 18 months later and was a member of the Nuggets’ championship team in 2023, becoming the first player in NBA history to rack up 10 or more assists in his first four NBA Finals games. In 2024, the athlete signed a four-year, $208 million contract extension.
While his career achievements are well-documented, not a ton is known about his life away from the court. However, in January 2025, it was revealed that Murray is a father to a then-18-month-old daughter. The little girl has since been seen at several of her dad’s games and even made appearances with him during warmups.
Now, fans want to know more about his daughter and who her mother is.
Who is Murray’s daughter’s mom, Harper Hempel?
Murray’s daughter’s mother is Harper Hempel.
She was born on Aug. 31, 1997, in Union, Kentucky, to parents Richard and Colleen. She has one sibling, a brother named Conner. Their father is the CEO and co-founder of the company eCoachSports.
After graduating from Ryle High School, Hempel attended the University of Kentucky where she played on the volleyball team. That’s also where she met Murray and they began dating in 2015.
Hempel has done some modeling and promotional work for several different products via her Instagram account, and has reportedly worked as a photographer as well.
Reports that Hempel and Murray are no longer together
Hempel and Murray’s relationship first made headlines in 2020 when an explicit tape of them together was uploaded to his Instagram Story.
Murray responded saying: “First and foremost, I would like to apologize to my fans. My account has been hacked currently working on the issue.” While Hemel asked that anyone who had the video delete it. She then took down all of her social media accounts for a period of time.
Since then, the two have been pretty quiet about their relationship with some outlets even reporting that they have broken up. However, Murray and Hempel never confirmed or denied any of those reports and have not commented on the status of their relationship these days.
Murray says his daughter ‘relaxes’ and inspires him
As for their daughter, Murray talked to reporters after a playoff game against the Los Angeles Clippers about how she inspires his play.
“I didn’t even finish my pregame routine just because I had her out there. And sometimes that just relaxes me,” he explained. “I don’t have to think about the game. I literally didn’t think about the game coming into the game. So it’s cool just to have her and kind of have my priorities in front of me.
“And when I go play, I’m just playing free … So yeah, I give my daughter credit.”
