AMERICANS have been warned to check their pantries after tomatoes were recalled in 14 states over fears they could lead to a fatal illness.

Two recalls were issued just a day apart and anyone who bought affected products is urged to throw them out and get a refund.

Both recalls were issued due to the risk that the tomatoes could be contaminated with Salmonella.

Williams Farms Repack LLC issued the first recall on May 2 after getting word from its supplier that its tomatoes might be contaminated.

Southeast Tomato Distributors notified the firm on April 29, 2025.

The tomatoes, which came in several sizes, were sold in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina between April 23 and April 28.

Customers who purchased Williams Farms tomatoes around that timeframe are urged to throw the product away or return it for a refund.

The second alert, issued on May 3, 2025, involved Ray & Mascari Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana, which recalled 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes.

Eleven states had been selling the recalled product including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The produce company recalled the item due to “possible presence” of Salmonella in their facility at Hanshaw & Capling Farms of Immokalee, Florida, according to the alert.

“Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA wrote.

“Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.”

If Salmonella gets into the bloodstream, there is a chance of contracting more serious illnesses like arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

The product was packaged in a 4-count plastic clamshell container with a “VINE RIPE TOMATOES” label.

Consumers who purchased the product have been asked to dispose of it immediately.

Although no illnesses have been reported so far, customers who experience symptoms were urged to contact Ray & Mascari Inc.
