While Derick’s decision to become a lawyer was largely praised by Duggar family followers, the 36-year-old is taking a break just a few years after achieving his goal. Jill Dillard is being evasive when discussing the change.

Derick Dillard is taking a break from the legal world

Derick Dillard spent just a few years working as an assistant district attorney before needing a break from the job. Rumors swirled that Derick had left his job behind several weeks ago, but now Jill has addressed the situation. Jill was questioned about Derick’s job during a recent Instagram Q&A. In response, she said her husband had left his job. She explained that Derick was taking a “sabbatical” to explore personal projects. While she didn’t elaborate on what he’s been up to, she called it a welcome “change of pace.”

Derick’s LinkedIn profile, however, suggests he has headed into private practice. While Jill never mentioned a private practice, it would be an entirely expected move. It is not uncommon for new lawyers to move on from their first job after a few years—many who have worked in roles like Derick’s parlay their experience into private practice.

When did Derick Dillard become a lawyer?

Derick and Jill announced Derick’s plan for law school in 2018. He graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 2021 and passed the Arkansas Bar Exam in February 2022. Derick and Jill documented the process on their family blog and on Instagram. He was sworn in as a licensed attorney in May 2022. Derick Dilard announced he landed a job working as an assistant district attorney in Oklahoma in May 2022, focusing on prosecution.

2022 was a busy year for the couple. Along with Derick’s new job, they sold their home and welcomed a new baby. The duo sold their house in Lowell, Arkansas, and moved to Siloam Springs, near the Arkansas-Oklahoma border. The move accommodated Derick’s new job in Oklahoma and their growing family. Their third son, Frederick Dillard, was born in July 2022.

Derick worked as an Assistant District Attorney until earlier this year. It is the only law job he’s held since his graduation. Jill Dillard’s work as an author and influencer appears to help the family stay afloat, as well. Some critics have theorized that Derick might be considering penning his own book after the success of Jill’s memoir. Derick had previously worked as an accountant, a youth pastor, and a missionary.
