The popular drugstore chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday as it faced continued financial struggles.

WASHINGTON — Pharmacy chain Rite Aid is planning another wave of store closures as it enters its second bankruptcy.

The popular drugstore chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday as it faced continued financial struggles. Rite Aid had previously filed for bankruptcy in October 2023 and downsized the company from over 2,300 stores to about 1,200.

Documents in a court filing on Tuesday revealed that the pharmacy chain plans to close 47 stores across the U.S.

In Monday’s announcement, the company said it planned to keep stores open for the next few months as it tries to sell substantially all of its assets. The company isn’t buying new inventory so bare shelves are likely to become more common, according to the Associated Press.

The struggling drugstore said it acquired $1.94 billion in new financing to keep the stores operating during the proceedings. Rite Aid said employees will continue receiving pay and benefits as the company goes through the proceedings and potential sale.

The company runs 1,245 stores in 15 states, according to its website. It has a heavy presence in New York, Pennsylvania and California, which alone has 347 locations.

List of Rite Aid store closures:

If approved as proposed, a total of 47 locations across nine states will close as part of the company’s “initial closing locations,” according to bankruptcy filings. It’s unclear if and when the proposal will be approved, or when locations would fully close.
