Homeowner finds human remains on Fleming Island along St. Johns River

A homeowner reported human remains along the St. Johns River on their property in Fleming Island Thursday. The sheriff’s office is now investigating.

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — A homeowner discovered human remains on their property along the St. Johns River in Fleming Island on Wednesday, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

The homeowner called 911 around 5:07 p.m. to report remains found in the river near the 3200 block of U.S. 17, close to the Doctors Lake bridge. CCSO dispatched patrol units, detectives and a dive team to the scene.

Deputies remained on site throughout the night and will return Thursday to continue the investigation, CCSO said.

The remains are being sent to the medical examiner’s office to help determine the person’s identity and cause of death.
