TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Two people and their cats are displaced from their Taylorville home after it caught fire overnight.
The fire happened on 1st Street near the intersection with Clay Street. Officials from the Taylorville Fire Department posted on Facebook that firefighters were dispatched at 2:30 a.m. for a report of a garage on fire. By the time they arrived, the garage was engulfed in flames, and the house and two cars in the driveway had caught fire as well.
“Firefighters knocked down a significant amount of fire on the exterior and then transitioned into an interior attack inside the home on the second floor,” fire officials wrote. “After extinguishing the fire, firefighters performed extensive overhaul of the structure.”
The people living in the home were there, but they got out unharmed along with their cats. The American Red Cross is assisting them at this time.
The Taylorville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by firefighters from Owaneco, Stonington and Morrisonville, the Taylorville Police Department and Dunns Ambulance. All units cleared the scene at 4:15 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
