SAVANNAH, Ga. () — The Savannah Christian baseball team advanced to the Class 3A-A Private state semifinals with a win over Greater Atlanta Christian, 9-7, on Thursday.
Savannah Christian received some help from the visitors to get on the board in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third, Christian attempted a squeeze play. However, the batter missed the ball and the runner on third was caught in a pickle when the catcher threw down to third base. The third baseman’s throw went to the backstop as the runner sprinted home.
Then, after the runner from second advanced to third base, he stumbled. As GAC, tried to catch the runner while down, they made another errant throw and the second run crossed on the play. Savannah Christian took a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Savannah Christian led 3-1. Starting pitcher Dawson Kelly was up to the plate with the bases loaded. He hit a single just out of the reach of the third baseman, who was a part of the drawn-in infield. The stroke scored two more runs and Savannah Christian went up 5-1.
Savannah Christian travels to Wesleyan on May 13 to compete in the state semifinals. This will be team’s first road trip of the state tournament.
