A Deadly American Marriage on Netflix is the latest true-crime documentary from the streamer, because if there’s one thing you can rely on in this crazy, mixed-up world, it’s that Netflix will never tire of investigating grisly murders.

Directed by Jenny Popplewell and Jessica Burgess, A Deadly American Marriage tells the true story of Jason Corbett, an Irish-born man who was killed in his North Carolina home nearly a decade ago, in 2015. The question at the center of the documentary, and the nearly 10-year legal case that followed, was not a matter of who killed Jason Corbett. Both Corbett’s wife, Molly Martens Corbett, and Molly’s father, Thomas Martens, told the police that Thomas beat Jason to death with a baseball bat. The question is whether Jason was beating his wife and threatening to kill her, and whether Molly and Tom were acting in self-defense.

The Netflix documentary raises many holes in Molly and Tom’s seemingly well-practiced story, including testimony from Jason’s two children (then 8 and 10), who initially claimed their father was abusive, and later claimed they were coached by Molly to say that. You can watch the documentary and come to your own conclusion, but it’s hard to deny there’s a lot that doesn’t add up. So did Molly Martens and Tom Martens go to prison for their crimes? Yes… but it’s complicated. Read on to see where Tom and Molly Martens from A Deadly American Marriage are now.

Where is Molly Martens Corbett from A Deadly American Marriage now?

Molly Martens was released from a prison in Davidson County in North Carolina, on June 6, 2024. Both Molly and her father have been out of prison for almost a year now. According to a report from AP News, Molly Martens and her father, Tom Martens, were subjected to one-year of post-release supervision that would be served in Tennessee, which is Martens’ home state and where her parents live.

According to an April 2025 report from Irish Independent, Molly Martens lived nearby her father in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was unable to live in the same home as them, because it is against U.S. law for convicted felons to share the same address. However, Molly will soon be able to return to her parents’ home in about four weeks, when her supervised probation ends.

Molly and Tom Martens were originally sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison after the daughter and father were convicted of second-degree murder in 2017. However, their lawyers appealed the conviction and were granted a retrial. In 2023, Molly and Tom Martens took a plea deal on charges of voluntary manslaughter, a much less severe crime. They were ultimately convicted, and sentenced to a minimum of 51 months (which is about four and a quarter years) in prison—but they were allowed to subtract the months already served from before the retrial.
